A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
